Dr. Brian K. Willis is a Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport. Dr. Willis is a native of Shreveport. He attended LSUS from 1975 to 1978, then graduated from LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport in 1982. He completed his neurosurgical training at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City in 1989. From 1989 through 1992, he served as Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of New Mexico, where he also served as Chief of the Neurosurgical Service at the Albuquerque VAMC and Director of Neuro-oncology Services at the UNM Cancer Center. In 1992, he returned home to Shreveport to help form the Department of Neurosurgery at LSUHSC. Dr. Willis has been instrumental in the development of the department’s clinical efforts to its current levels.

He was board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgeons in 1994. Recognized as a Fellow with the American College of Surgeons, he remains an active member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Louisiana State Neurological Society, and the AMA.

Dr. Willis has contributed an extensive number of scientific publications on a wide variety of neurosurgical subjects throughout his career. He has also participated in a number of clinical trials for the treatment of head injuries and brain tumors, and assisted in the development and testing of image-guided navigational systems to aid in neurosurgical procedures. He has a special interest in the care of infants and children with neurosurgical problems and, in 1995, pursued additional training in pediatric neurosurgery at the Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, UT. Other areas of special expertise include stereotactic and image-guided neurosurgery, including Gamma Knife radiosurgery and neuro-endoscopy.

In addition to his academic position at LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport, Dr. Willis serves on the active or courtesy staff of most Willis-Knighton and Christus-Schumpert hospitals, the VAMC in Shreveport, and the Shriner’s Hospital for Children. He maintains clinical offices both at LSUHSC and Willis-Knighton Bossier Medical Center.

Dr. Willis resides in Benton, LA with his wife and four children. He served as a battalion surgeon with the 1st Battalion, 23rd Marines in the Anbar Province, Iraq from August 2004 to April 2005.
